Sri Lanka is a world within a country. You can literally go from 40 degrees to 100 degrees in a matter of 3 hours. Being close to the equator, Sri Lanka does not experience any heavy seasonal changes. That is what makes it even more special. You can visit Sri Lanka any day of the year without having to worry about the weather.
Being a tropical paradise, rain is pretty common in most parts of the country year round. Still, if you are looking for some fun in the sun, Sri Lanka is the destination for you. If you visit from November to April, the Southern coast is a sunny paradise. From May to October the Eastern coast is the people’s choice.
A couple of tips for your wardrobe in Sri Lanka.
First, you don’t need to overthink it. Sri Lanka is a pretty laid back country. They understand that you are from a different culture. You don’t have to over complicate it by trying to blend in. Try some local creations which are handwoven and hand-printed and are rich in culture and excessively fashionable!
Having said that, Sri Lanka is a deeply religious country, therefore don’t forget to have some modest clothing (preferably white) that covers shoulders, midriff, arms and legs, especially when visiting religious sites.
Finally, you don’t have to worry about the climate when packing because it is always the same. However, if you plan to visit the central hills, a sweater might come in handy.
The Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR) is the local currency used. A US dollar is worth around 190 LKR. The Sri Lankan airports have local bank outlets to exchange your currency. The best is to have US dollars in hand as most places do not accept every form of currency. All major cities will have money exchange dealers. Some might offer you a better rate than other places, but the safest is always to visit a bank. As a safety measure, make sure you don’t carry too much cash with you.
